The Rajasthan Royals captain, Sanju Samson, was fined 12 lacs after his team’s over rate was slow in an IPL 2023 match against Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday. “Rajasthan Royals have been penalized for keeping a slow over-rate throughout their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match 17 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Wednesday,” the IPL said in a statement.
“Captain Sanju Samson was fined 12 lakh because it was the team’s first offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses,” the release continued.
The fine was probably just a word of caution for Samson, as the joy and satisfaction of beating CSK for the first time in Chepauk since 2008 were far greater. And they did it in style, denying a rampaging MS Dhoni a six or four off the final ball of the game to walk away with a three-run victory.
Sandeep Sharma deserves a lot of credit for bowling two yorkers – one outside off-stump to Jadeja and one to Dhoni – when CSK needed 6 runs off 2 balls. And he did it after Dhoni had muscled him for two sixes earlier in the over.
“You have to give the boys credit. The bowlers kept their cool and bowled really well at the end, and we also held on to our catches. I don’t have fond memories of Chepauk, and I wanted to win today. We brought in Zampa as the impact player because the ball was gripping. “We had a good powerplay with Rutu getting out, and the thought was that if we can get out of the powerplay without giving too much away, then we have the spinners to do the job,” Samson said after the game.
With three wins in four games, RR moved to the top of the IPL 2023 points table. So far, the best side on paper has been delivered on the field as well. Samson, who was out for a two-ball duck, would like to get back in the game, but he also wants his team to keep the winning streak going.
