Team India surpassed Australia to become the top-ranked team across all formats following the release of the ICC Test rankings on Wednesday. After defeating Australia by an inning and 132 runs in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur, India surpassed Australia to become the top-ranked team in T20Is and ODIs. India currently has a rating of 115. Australia (111), England (106), and New Zealand (100).
This is the first time India has ranked first in all formats at the same time. All of this occurred while Rohit Sharma was captain, making him the first Indian captain to accomplish this remarkable feat.
India had risen to the top of the One-Day International (ODI) rankings last month after defeating New Zealand 3-0 at home. This victory came after a 3-0 thrashing of Sri Lanka.
India must still defeat Australia in the next Test in New Delhi to maintain their lead and improve their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship final in England in June. If India beats Australia 3-1 or 4-0 in the ongoing series, Rohit Sharma’s team will take a commanding lead.
Individually, India’s players improved significantly. Ravichandran has risen to second place in the Test bowler rankings, 21 points behind Australia captain Pat Cummins, and has returned to the top spot for the first time since 2017.
By taking 5/37 in the second innings to go with 3/42 earlier in the game, veteran off-spinner Ashwin made sure India completed their stunning victory before tea on the third day.
While Ashwin stepped up in the final session of the Test, Jadeja wreaked havoc on the first day with 5/47, including prized wickets of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne.
In the second innings, Jadeja took 2/34 with Ashwin as the spin twins promptly destroyed Australia’s top seven hitters and left them reeling at 67/7 on their route to being all out for 91.
India captain Rohit Sharma has risen from 10th to 8th in the Men’s Test Batting Rankings following his match-defining ton in Nagpur.
After Australia was all out for 177 in their first innings, Rohit stepped to the crease and made the wicket appear all but tame with an assured 120 that set the tone for the rest of the match.
