Seishinkai Karate Championship
Kolkata, April 5: The West Bengal Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Championship, held at Kathakali Banquet on April 4 and 5, brought together nearly 1,500 participants from 24 districts, underlining the rapid growth of organized karate in the state.
The championship was organized by the Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Association of Bengal, in association with the Howrah District Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate Association, and witnessed two days of intense competition, discipline, and high technical standards across all categories.
The event was inaugurated on the first day by Mr. Kamalesh Chatterjee, Vice President, Bengal Olympic Association, while Dr. Sujay Chakroborty inaugurated the proceedings on the second day. Both days were conducted in the presence of Hanshi Premjit Sen, President, All India Seishinkai Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation, whose leadership has been central to the expansion and structuring of Seishinkai activities across India.

Widely regarded as one of the driving forces behind grassroots karate development, Hanshi Premjit Sen has built Seishinkai into a system that not only focuses on competition but also on long-term athlete support, instructor development, and institutional discipline. His approach has emphasized consistency, financial backing, and creating real opportunities for athletes beyond tournaments.
Over the years, under his leadership, Seishinkai has introduced a structured support system rarely seen in martial arts organizations. This includes annual sponsorships for national-level participation, financial incentives for players and coaches, and continuous investment in referee development and training infrastructure. His initiatives have ensured that talented athletes are not held back due to financial limitations.
A key highlight of the championship was the announcement that all “Champion of Champions” winners will be fully sponsored to participate in the official State Championship, reinforcing the federation’s commitment to performance-based progression. Additionally, all district units under Seishinkai were provided ₹11,000 each as developmental support, strengthening the foundation at the district level.
Seishinkai’s welfare-driven model, spearheaded by Hanshi Sen, also extends beyond sport. The organization has provided ₹3,00,000 assistance to an injured instructor, ₹1,00,000 to the family of a deceased instructor, and contributed ₹1,00,000 to the Chief Minister’s COVID Relief Fund, reflecting a broader commitment to its community. Regular free instructor training camps, along with sponsorships for referees and international participation, further highlight a system built on sustainability and growth.
Speaking at the event, Hanshi Premjit Sen said, “I sincerely thank our esteemed guests for their presence and encouragement. The success of this championship belongs to our instructors, referees, and coaches, whose dedication and discipline continue to shape the future of karate in Bengal.”
Mr. Kamalesh Chatterjee noted, “I have known Premjit Sen for a long time, and his contribution to karate is significant. The scale, discipline, and organization seen here reflect years of hard work and commitment.”
Dr. Sujay Chakroborty Ex.Chairperson Howrah Municipal Corporation added, “This championship reflects a strong system and leadership. The work being done by Hanshi Premjit Sen to develop young talent is truly commendable.”
