On the occasion of World Kidney Day, stories of resilience and recovery remind the world that life after serious illness can still be meaningful and impactful. One such story is that of Hasainul Arafine Choudhury, a kidney survivor, author, and professional whose journey reflects the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Originally from Siliguri, West Bengal, India Choudhury’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease, a condition affecting millions globally. What followed was a challenging period of treatment, lifestyle changes, and emotional endurance.
“Success during critical illness looks different but it is real, meaningful, and deeply powerful,” Choudhury says while reflecting on his journey.
Fighting a Silent Disease
Kidney disease often progresses silently, with many patients discovering the condition only at an advanced stage. In severe cases, treatments such as Dialysis and Kidney Transplant become essential to sustain life.
For Choudhury, navigating this medical journey required patience, strict discipline, and a shift in mindset.
“When your body is fighting for life, traditional definitions of success disappear,” he says. “In those moments, survival itself becomes the first achievement.”
Health experts say that during critical illness, recovery often begins with small steps regaining strength, maintaining stability, and following treatment carefully.
Redefining Success During Illness
According to Choudhury, patients dealing with serious illness must learn to redefine what success means.
“End-stage disease should not be the end of life,” he says. “It can be the beginning of life.”
Doctors often encourage patients to focus on small, achievable goals during recovery. Simple activities—such as sitting upright, walking a few steps, or reading a page of a book can gradually rebuild physical strength and mental confidence.
“Surviving each day, maintaining mental strength, and following medical discipline are powerful forms of success,” Choudhury adds.
Turning Adversity Into Creativity
While recovering, Choudhury discovered a new purpose through writing. Alongside his professional career, he began documenting his experiences and reflections on resilience.
This journey led him to write two novels.
His acclaimed book A Story of Hope in Times of Crisis received significant recognition, winning the Sahitya Sparsh Award in 2024 and the Rabindra Ratna Puraskar in 2025.
He is now preparing to release his upcoming business thriller novel Mission 51%, which blends storytelling with insights from real-world professional experiences.
According to Hasainul Arafine Choudhury, writing became a form of healing.
“When you go through life-threatening illness, your perspective changes,” he says. “Writing helped me transform pain into purpose.”
A Voice for Awareness and Inclusion
Beyond literature, Choudhury continues to share his journey through his personal website www.hasainulchoudhury.com, where he writes blogs about resilience, leadership, and recovery.
Through these efforts, he hopes to inspire individuals facing adversity and encourage greater awareness about kidney health.
“Patients with kidney failure should not be marginalized,” he says. “With discipline and perseverance, they can live meaningful lives and contribute to society.”
Message for World Kidney Day
As the world observes World Kidney Day, Choudhury believes awareness, early diagnosis, and patient support remain critical in addressing kidney disease.
He also encourages patients to stay optimistic and maintain strong connections with their healthcare providers.
“Be optimistic. Ask for help. Always stay in touch with your doctors and maintain a disciplined life,” he advises.
According to him, discovering purpose plays a crucial role in recovery.
“If you give life a purpose, you will realize that survival is not the end of the journey,” he says. “You can rebuild your life and even achieve success.”
A Journey of Hope
Kidney disease continues to be a major global health challenge, but stories like Choudhury’s highlight the power of determination and resilience.
As World Kidney Day emphasizes awareness and prevention, his journey serves as a reminder that illness does not define a person’s future.
Sometimes, the greatest success begins with the determination to survive and the courage to build a new life beyond illness.
