Expansion into seven new countries and ICAO recognition highlight a new phase of growth and global engagement
The Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM IGO) has announced a significant strategic boost, marking a new chapter in its global mission to combat malnutrition. With a renewed strategy, a high-impact campaign centered on spirulina, and expansion plans across several new countries, IIMSAM IGO is strengthening its role as a leading intergovernmental organization in sustainable nutrition and global health.

At the heart of this renewed momentum is a comprehensive global campaign promoting spirulina as a natural, nutrient-dense, and sustainable solution to malnutrition. Rich in protein, essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, spirulina continues to be a cornerstone of IIMSAM IGO’s efforts to address hunger, undernutrition, and food insecurity—particularly among vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and communities affected by crises.
The new strategy focuses on:
- Scaling up spirulina-based nutrition interventions
- Expanding partnerships with governments, UN agencies, NGOs, and the private sector
- Strengthening advocacy, awareness, and capacity-building initiatives
- Supporting local production and integration of spirulina into national nutrition programs
As part of this strategic expansion, IIMSAM IGO is preparing for upcoming missions in several new countries, namely: INDIA, UK, NETHERLANDS, NEPAL, UGANDA etc where tailored programs, technical cooperation, and collaborative initiatives will be launched to support national and regional efforts to fight malnutrition.
In parallel with its programmatic growth, IIMSAM IGO has recently achieved a major institutional milestone by securing a three-letter designator code for its laissez-passer documents from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This important recognition enhances the organization’s operational mobility and international standing, enabling smoother official travel and more effective execution of global missions.
These achievements reflect the dedicated efforts of IIMSAM IGO’s leadership and team, particularly Dr. Sahil Singh, Ambassador for Strategic Partnerships and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), and Mr. Asif Ayoob, ASG & Chief of Protocol. Their commitment, strategic engagement, and tireless work have been instrumental in advancing IIMSAM IGO’s global strategy, strengthening international partnerships, and achieving critical milestones such as ICAO recognition.
“This progress represents a collective effort driven by vision, diplomacy, and dedication,” IIMSAM IGO noted. “The contributions of our leadership and protocol teams have been vital in positioning IIMSAM IGO for greater global impact.”
With a renewed strategic vision, expanding international footprint, and strengthened institutional recognition, IIMSAM IGO is poised to accelerate its mission—leveraging spirulina as a powerful tool in the global fight against malnutrition while advancing the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
