KANNAGI NAGAR is a love and thriller drama set in the backdrop of the well-known Chennai neighbourhood that shares its name. The film is directed and written by Dheena, who brings a realistic and heartfelt narrative to the screen. The movie also features the musical brilliance of Thenisai Thendral Deva, whose compositions are expected to be a highlight of the film.
The story follows Kutty and Meena, two young children who lose their parents in the devastating tsunami. Raised by their grandmother in Kannagi Nagar, the two grow up deeply connected to each other and to their community. But life takes a dark turn when Meena is kidnapped by five boys. Believing that Meena has been raped and murdered, Kutty collapses emotionally and mentally. A young and mentally unstable charity founder saves him, setting Kutty on a path of revenge. Driven by pain and confusion, Kutty kills the five boys responsible.
Later, Kutty discovers that Meena is actually alive and living in Thailand. Holding onto hope, he travels across borders to find her. When he finally meets her, Meena refuses to accept him and urges him to change his ways and lead a better life. Unable to bear her rejection and broken by guilt and grief, Kutty takes his own life at a construction site. The film ends as a tragic reflection on trauma, love, and the impact of violence on young lives.
The film stars Gautham as Kutty, Deepa Umapathi as Meena, Muthuraj as Dharma, Bala Singh as Vaathiyaar, and Ko. Raviraj as the Social Service Founder, each delivering compelling performances. Cinematography by Mohammed Farhan captures both the vibrancy and the struggles of the community, while editing by Marish & K. Manikandan ensures a sharp and engaging pace throughout the film.
With a production budget of 3.5crore and a running time of 1 hour 47 minutes, Kannagi Nagar is a tightly woven story that blends entertainment with social awareness. The film is produced in Tamil, shot in color, and proudly carries its Indian identity from storyline to screen.
