Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Singapore on Wednesday, where he was warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora at his hotel in the morning. In a lively display of cultural enthusiasm, PM Modi joined in the celebrations, impressing the crowd by playing the dhol.
Upon his arrival at Singapore’s Changi Airport from Brunei, PM Modi was greeted by the Indian High Commissioner to Singapore, Shilpak Ambule, and Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, along with other officials.
During his stay in Singapore, PM Modi is set to meet with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to assess the progress of the India-Singapore Strategic Partnership. The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
In addition to his meeting with PM Wong, PM Modi will call on Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and engage with Singaporean leadership. He is also scheduled to meet with business leaders from Singapore. This visit to Singapore follows PM Modi’s official trip to Brunei.
Before arriving in Singapore, Modi was on an official visit to Brunei, where he held extensive talks with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the Royal Palace, Istana Nurul Iman, in Bandar Seri Begawan. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations between India and Brunei, with an emphasis on expanding trade, commercial links, and people-to-people exchanges.
In a social media post, Modi expressed his satisfaction with the meeting, stating, “Delighted to meet His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah. Our talks were wide-ranging and included ways to further cement bilateral ties between our nations. We are going to further expand trade ties, commercial linkages, and people-to-people exchanges.”
During his visit to Brunei, PM Modi also inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in the capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan, and visited the historic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque.
Reflecting on PM Modi’s visit to Brunei, Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East of the Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted that PM Modi had in-depth discussions with Sultan Bolkiah on a broad range of topics, including defense, trade, investment, space, energy, health, culture, and people-to-people relations.
