Kharge criticized the government, accusing the BJP of amassing significant funds through electoral bonds and simultaneously impeding the Opposition. He asserted that the ruling party’s actions, such as freezing their accounts, aim to obstruct their ability to participate effectively in elections. Sonia Gandhi, another Congress leader, alleged that money from the party’s bank accounts is being seized forcefully. She emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the freezing of accounts poses a serious threat to Indian democracy overall.
Congress leader Ajay Maken raised concerns about the freezing of 11 bank accounts belonging to the Congress party, questioning why this action was taken while no political parties, including the BJP, have paid income tax. He highlighted that the Congress party has received new notices from the Income Tax Department for the fiscal year 1994, requesting penalty calculations after a lengthy 31-year assessment period.
Last month, Income Tax authorities issued an order imposing a penalty of Rs 210 crore on the Congress party for purported inconsistencies in its tax returns from previous years. The Congress party has appealed against this penalty and stated that it is considering all available legal avenues.
Additionally, the Congress party previously accused the Income Tax department of undemocratically withdrawing Rs 65 crore from its accounts across various banks.
