In Anu Menon’s film “Neeyat” Vidya Balan takes on the role of a unique crime investigator named Mira Rao. Mira is portrayed as a laconic, straight-faced, and observant woman who strategically uses silence as a shield and a tool. She finds herself navigating the opulent Scottish seaside castle after its owner tragically jumps off a cliff.
While the Neeyat offers a few refreshing elements, such as Vidya Balan’s portrayal of Mira Rao, it relies on a mix of clever twists and clichéd hooks to create a whodunit experience that is only sporadically effective. The performances in the movie Neeyat are also inconsistent, with only a few actors, including Neeraj Kabi, Shahana Goswami, and Shashank Arora, managing to raise the bar.
Despite these drawbacks, Neeyat maintains a fast pace, leaving little room for speculation. Although the initial details of the potential suspects are quickly introduced, the intricacies of the plot and the web of lies surrounding the tycoon’s death are gradually revealed, creating suspense until the very end.
Vidya Balan effortlessly slips into the role of Mira Rao, displaying a low-key and unshowy acting style that effectively conveys a wide range of emotions. The screenplay, written by Anu Menon, Priya Venkataraman, Advaita Kala, and Girvani Dhyani, incorporates contemporary elements, such as a bank loan defaulter and a maverick businessman responsible for the suicide of their employees, adding relevance to the story.
Mira Rao, resembling a mix of Miss Marple, Benoit Blanc, and Sherlock Holmes, becomes her unique character. Plunging headlong into the case that lands in her lap, she views everyone in the Highgrave Castle as a suspect. The castle, situated on a cliff overlooking a stormy sea, becomes a backdrop for the film’s events, filled with bacchanalian excess and dark history.
As the movie Neeyat progresses, people within the castle start losing their lives, starting with the owner, Ashish Kapoor. Mira Rao, being present at the castle for a specific mission, begins her investigations before Scotland Yard can intervene.
Neeyat encompasses the look and feel of a classic crime drama but deviates at times from genre conventions. The familiar setting of a grand mansion hiding secrets and the gallery of characters do not offer many surprises. Mira Rao suspects foul play in Ashish Kapoor’s death, making everyone on the guest list a potential suspect.
The film Neeyat opens with Ashish Kapoor inviting his friends and family to a grand birthday party while evading the law. As the story unfolds, revelations pile up, ensuring that the guessing game remains engaging. In the final act, secrets are unveiled, allegations and confessions fly, and more deaths occur, narrowing down the list of suspects.
Despite some forced and hurried moments, Neeyat successfully sustains the mystery until the climactic finale, featuring a few unexpected twists. Overall, the film delivers a fast-paced, strictly by-the-book thriller that keeps the audience entertained without reaching true-blue excellence.
