At Singapore, a tourist who cashed tickets he found at a casino was given a four-month jail term. The event reportedly occurred in March when Indonesian Silitonga Andri Parulian discovered eight slot machine tickets totaling $17,900 on the floor of Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands Casino. Just before Silitonga started playing, the tickets were missing from a staff member’s folder near the room’s door. He snatched up the tickets in a flash and promptly cashed them all at the casino.
The SCMP article stated that the 27-year-old hurried to Changi International Airport in an effort to leave Singapore. But police did detain him. According to a court official quoted by the publication, the tickets belonged to Tham Wan Nyit, a manager in charge of the casino’s slot machine operations.
Silitonga came at the event just then and took the tickets, without intending to give them back or to the security of the casino. CCTV cameras in the casino recorded the entire incident.
In order to transfer some of the money to his Indonesian bank account, Silitonga called a buddy after leaving the casino and spent the night there.
Then he paid Singapore $3,000 to his account and $2,000 to his girlfriend’s account in Indonesia via Western Union Money Transfer services. The next day, he made additional transfers.
In the meantime, casino staff reported the incident to the police, and Silitonga was recognized in the CCTV footage. Three days ago, as he attempted to pass through immigration to take an aircraft to Indonesia, it was discovered that he was on the stop list.
The money was sent, but he refused to give it back and did not tell the police what he did with the rest. A lower punishment was requested by Silitonga when he was brought before the judge.
He pleaded guilty to a single count of dishonestly misappropriating money, and as a result, received a four-month prison term.
