In a rare honour for a non-Fijian, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with the highest honour of Fiji on Monday by its premier Sitiveni Rabuka in appreciation of his leadership on the international stage.
Modi made his first trip to Papua New Guinea on Sunday to host an important summit between India and 14 Pacific island nations to strengthen bilateral ties.
Significant Honor for India. In honour of Prime Minister Modi ‘s global leadership, the Fijian Prime Minister has bestowed upon him the highest honour bestowed by the country: Companion of the Order of Fiji. Only a small number of non-Fijians have been honoured with this status thus far, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
The Tweet by PMO India reads: “PM @narendramodi has been conferred the highest honour of Fiji, the Companion of the Order of Fiji. It was presented to him by PM @slrabuka.”
The special and enduring bond between the two nations has been a major contributor to the generations of the Fijian-Indian community as well as the people of India, according to a tweet from the Ministry of External Affairs. Prime Minister Modi dedicated the honour to them.
He also got a chance to speak with Rabuka, his Fijian counterpart, outside the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit.
“Delighted to have met Fijian Prime Minister @slrabuka. On a variety of subjects, we had a fantastic conversation. Time has not harmed the ties between India and Fiji. In the upcoming years, we look forward to cooperating to strengthen it even further,” PM Modi tweeted.
