On Thursday, young wrestler Aman Sehrawat opened India’s gold medal account at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. Sehrawat won gold in the 57kg category, defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Almaz Smanbekov in the final.
On the penultimate day of the championships, Sehrawat, who has continued to impress on the senior circuit, defeated Smanbekov 9-4 in the final.
Aman Sehrawat, who trains at Delhi’s famed Chhatrasal Stadium, had previously defeated Japan’s Rikuto Arai 7-1 in the quarter-finals before defeating China’s Wanhao Zou 7-4 in the semi-finals.Â
It was Sehrawat’s second podium finish of the 2023 season, following her bronze at the Zagreb Open in February. Last year, he won the U-23 World Championships.
On Thursday, two more Indians made it to the bronze-medal round.
Both Deepak Kukna (79 kg) and Deepak Nehra (97 kg) lost their respective semi-finals and will compete for bronze. Anuj Kumar (65 kg) and Mulayam Yadav (70 kg) were both unable to advance to the medal round.
With Sehrawat’s gold medal, India has now amassed 12 medals in the contest. The women wrestlers took home seven medals, compared to four for the Greco-Roman wrestlers.
