Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP, is in England for a 10-day visit. The Wayanad MP will be in London for three days, speaking at the British Parliament, meeting with the Indian diaspora, addressing a press conference organized by the Indian Journalist Association, holding private business meetings, and giving a talk at Chatham House, a well-known London thinks tank.
From March 4 to 6, the senior Congress leader will be in London. He’ll be leaving town the next day. Gandhi is accompanied by Sam Pitroda, the president of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC).
According to Sam Pitroda of India Today, Rahul’s London visit is just an “attachment” to his Cambridge University trip, where he gave a presentation earlier this week.
Pitroda is a tech innovator and entrepreneur who is widely known as Rahul Gandhi’s close political aide.
Rahul Gandhi will also address the Indian diaspora during his visit to London. “Over 2,000 people have registered,” said Kamal Dhaliwal, UK president of the Indian Overseas Congress, in an interview with India Today.
Rahul Gandhi will speak on March 6 to an audience of UK MPs, Lords, Baronesses, and others in the Grand Committee Room of the Palace of Westminster. The event in parliament was organized by Virendra Sharma, the chair of the Indo-British APPG and a member of parliament with Indian ancestry. According to India Today, “The debate is not limited to a political future, but must embrace the cultural, social, and business ties that unite both countries, as the people are the living bridge.”
Clarifying that the speech will take place in one of the “parliamentary committee rooms,” rather than the chambers themselves, Sharma elaborated on the real interest is to see “how the Congress party will deal with the future leaders and governments of Britain, especially when India and the UK are both fundamentally key allies, democratic, progressive, and committed to the rules-based international order.”
On the same day as the parliament event, Rahul Gandhi will speak at Chatham House, one of the UK’s leading think tanks. During the weekend, he will also hold some private business meetings.
The Congress MP may also meet David Lammy, the Labour Party’s Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs. However, there has been no official confirmation. As of now, the Labour Party is expected to win the next general election in the United Kingdom.
Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with Jeremy Corbyn, the then-leader of the Labour Party, sparked controversy in India with the BJP during his May 2022 visit.
For his stance on Kashmir, Jeremy Corbyn is frequently regarded as an “anti-India” figure.
