West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party BJP on Monday for “insulting” Nobel laureate Amartya Sen and renewed her vow to defeat it in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, according to news agency PTI.
Speaking in the state assembly, Banerjee stated that the country should work to establish a “people’s government” to end the chaos. “The BJP has gone on to insulting a Nobel laureate (Amartya Sen),” Banerjee added.
Visva-Bharati University claims Sen has 1.38 acres of land, which exceeds his rights of 1.25 acres. The claim was frequently refuted by the economist. During a visit to Birbhum district, the West Bengal Chief Minister expressed his support for the economist and handed over land-related paperwork to him.
In an apparent allusion to BJP president JP Nadda’s recent remarks on violence and corruption in Bengal, Banerjee stated in the legislature that her state had a better law and order condition than the rest of the country.
Banerjee further claimed that the Border Security Force, or BSF, has “unleashed fear” in the state’s border territories. “Innocent people are being killed at the border. “The Centre never sends fact-finding teams to investigate these killings,” she claims.
Mocking the Centre’s Valentine’s Day announcement, which was later withdrawn, Banerjee wondered what would happen if the cow hit the person. “What will happen if the cow runs over us? Will they (the BJP) compensate us?” she asked.
News organization The parliament erupted after Speaker Biman Banerjee sought a privilege motion against Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari for reportedly casting aspersions on him and insulting the assembly, according to ANI.
The BJP then staged a walkout in the legislature. Adhikari began presenting his remarks after the House returned from recess, criticizing the governor’s inaugural address.
The speaker, on the other hand, asked him not to make such claims on the House floor. In protest, the BJP legislative party raised shouts against the speaker and staged a walkout in the assembly.
“I reserve the right to submit a privilege motion against Suvendu Adhikari for casting aspersions on the speaker,” Banerjee said.
Mamata Banerjee later denounced Adhikari’s behavior in the House during her address.
