RRR, SS Rajamouli’s period action drama, is on a winning streak, having won two Critics’ Choice Awards. The film received nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Song.
The period action drama starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan Teja won Best Foreign Language Film over the Argentine film Argentina, 1985, the German anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front, the Mexican black comedy Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, the French coming-of-age drama Close, and the Korean romance mystery Decision to Leave.
Mass anthem of RRR “Naatu Naatu” triumphed over Carolina from Where the Crawdads Sing, Ciao Papa from Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro, Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick, Lift Me Up from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and New Body Rhumba from White Noise.
SS Rajamouli and his son SS Karthikeya took home the award for Best Foreign Language Film, while MM Keeravaani took home the award for Best Original Song.
The Critics’ Choice Awards victories follow Naatu Naatu’s Golden Globes win for Best Original Song. MM Keeravaani, the film’s music composer, accepted the award and thanked the audience for their support. Keeravaani also expressed gratitude to his brother, RRR director SS Rajamouli, for his vision and encouragement.
He then expressed gratitude to choreographer Prem Rakshith, singer Kala Bhairava, and lyricist Chandrabose. He also praised Jr NTR and Ram Charan for ‘dancing with full stamina’.
Naatu Naatu is also on the Oscar shortlist, and the film was named to the BAFTA longlist in the category of ‘film not in English’.
Meanwhile, SS Rajamouli and MM Keeravaani met Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg on Saturday at a Universal Pictures party. Rajamouli tweeted a photo of himself and Keeravaani with Spielberg, writing, “I just met my GOD!!!”
MM Keeravaani also posted a photo from the party with the caption, “And I couldn’t believe it when he said he liked Naatu Naatu.” The veteran music composer admitted that DUEL is his favorite of Spielberg’s films, writing, “Had the privilege of meeting the God of movies and say in his ears that I love his movies including DUEL like anything.”
