Two of the Indian cricket team’s primary sponsors, edtech giant Byju’s and MPL Sports, have decided to end their sponsorship deals with the BCCI.
Byju’s extended their jersey sponsorship agreement with the Board through November 2023 at an estimated USD 35 million in June. Byju’s currently want to end its contract with the BCCI, which has requested that it remain at least until March 2023.
“On November 4, 2022, the BCCI received an email from Byju’s demanding that the association be terminated following the just finished T20 World Cup. According to our discussions with Byju’s, we have urged them to maintain the current arrangement and collaboration at least until 31.3.2023 “Read a BCCI memo on the subject.
On Wednesday, the BCCI Apex Council met to consider the issue.
Oppo was succeeded by the brand in 2019. Byju’s was also a sponsor of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The edtech firm has revealed plans to lay off no more than 5% of its overall workforce of 50000 people.
The team kit and merchandising sponsor had informed the BCCI of Kewal Kiran Clothing Limit’s entire assignment of its rights (KKCL). The current contract is in effect until December 31, 2023. MPL had taken over for Nike in November 2020.
“On 2.12.2022, BCCI got an email from MPL Sports requesting a full assignment (team + merchandising) to Kewal Kiran Clothing Limited, a fashion wear business, for the period from 1.12.2023 to 31.12.2023.
“With the impending back-to-back home series and the women’s away calendar, it was advised that the current arrangement be maintained because it concerns performance equipment for the national teams.
“We have urged MPL Sports to continue the association at least until 31.3.2023 or look for a partial assignment involving only the right chest logo but not the kit production agreement,” according to the note.
Paytm transferred their title sponsorship rights for Indian cricket’s home season to Mastercard earlier this year.
