Google has released its ‘Year in Search 2022,’ a rundown of the most significant trends in search over the past 11+ months of the year 2022. According to the list, despite not being the most commercially successful Indian film of the year, Ayan Mukerji’s Brahmastra Part One- Shiva generated the most buzz. The film topped the year’s movie search list, beating out several other popular blockbusters such as KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, Kantara, and The Kashmir Files.
Brahmastra starred Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Mouni Roy, with cameo appearances by Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Nagarjuna. The high-budget fantasy adventure grossed more than 400 crores. Given its scope, it was a highly anticipated film that topped the search charts for all Indian films this year. It was followed by the Kannada blockbuster KGF 2, starring Yash, which was the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. The Kashmir Files, a sleeper hit by Vivek Agnihotri, rounded out the top three on the list.
Four films from the three southern industries follow, including Telugu sensation RRR at number four, Kannada hit Kantara at number five, and Kamal Haasan’s comeback Tamil film Vikram at number seven. The most notable entry is at number 6–the Telugu hit Pushpa: The Rise, which was released last year but managed to dominate search trends in 2022 long enough to outperform many of this year’s hits. In the list, as in the box office, films from the south edged out Bollywood. Only four Hindi films made the top ten, compared to five from the south. Aside from Brahmastra and The Kashmir Files, Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha and Ajay Devgn’s Drishyam 2 rounded out the top ten.
The only Hollywood entry, Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder, rounds out the list. Despite the fact that both Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness did more business than Thor 4, the latter polarised more people, which may have contributed to its high search trend.
Unlike last year, when Suriya’s Jai Bhim topped the list, this year’s list was dominated by commercially successful or big-budget films. With the exception of Laal Singh Chaddha, all of the films in the top ten were commercial successes (though the case with Brahmastra is ambiguous given its high budget).
