Magizhan Santhors
From the humble rhythms of the parai drum to the grandeur of international orchestras, the story of Magizhan Santhors is one of cultural preservation, innovation, and artistic defiance. Born in the culturally rich village of Alaveddy, Jaffna, Magizhan’s life journey traces the arc of the Tamil diaspora — one that carries both the wounds of displacement and the strength of heritage.
The son of Pulenthiran and Mangaiyatkarasi, Magizhan migrated to Denmark as a refugee at just seven years old, later settling in London, where he completed a degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Yet, even as he built a professional life as an engineer, his heart resonated with the pulse of Tamil music and the power of cultural activism.
Magizhan’s musical journey is deeply intertwined with the revival of the parai drum — once stigmatized, now reborn as a symbol of resistance and pride. Through his protests, street performances, and musical compositions, he fused the raw energy of traditional Tamil rhythms with modern, global sounds. His art became both a voice of protest and a bridge between worlds, seamlessly blending Tamil folk, Western classical, and contemporary hip-hop influences.
A self-taught musician, Magizhan’s creative fire was sparked by poetry and shaped by diverse inspirations ranging from Santhan and A.R. Rahman to Beethoven and Tupac. His first release at just 18 years old, Only Memories Remain, reflected on his homeland and personal displacement — marking the beginning of a prolific career that would span over 200 original compositions and collaborations with artists across continents.

His evolution from a refugee child to a global cultural ambassador proves that music can transcend exile, borders, and time — carrying the echoes of a homeland in every beat.
