Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brunei Darussalam on Tuesday, marking the first-ever bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to the country. In a special gesture, Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah personally welcomed Modi upon his arrival. During the visit, PM Modi will engage in discussions with Brunei’s top leadership to explore ways to enhance bilateral relations.
Before his departure, Modi expressed anticipation for the visit, noting the significance of the trip as the two nations celebrate 40 years of diplomatic relations. He highlighted his meetings with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and other members of the Royal family as opportunities to elevate the historical ties between India and Brunei.
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the visit would bolster cooperation between the two countries across various sectors, including defense, trade and investment, energy, space technology, health, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people connections, while also exploring new areas of collaboration.
Members of the Indian diaspora in Brunei eagerly awaited Modi’s arrival, expressing their excitement and pride in the prime minister’s leadership and the global recognition of India.
Following his visit to Brunei, PM Modi will travel to Singapore on Wednesday, where he is scheduled to meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.
