Vinesh Phogat
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams overweight led to strong political reactions, with the Congress-led opposition raising questions. Vinesh Phogat was removed from the competition just hours before her scheduled match against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the 50-kg freestyle final.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for Vinesh Phogat on X, calling her “a champion among champions” and encouraging her to “come back stronger.” He acknowledged the setback but praised her resilience. Other senior government members, including Home Minister Amit Shah and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, also lauded Phogat’s perseverance. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, addressing the Lok Sabha amid opposition protests, detailed the government’s support for Phogat, mentioning financial assistance and the assignment of personal staff and coaches.
Opposition parties, led by figures like Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, called for an investigation into the technical reasons behind Phogat’s disqualification. Congress MP Randeep Surjewala suggested a conspiracy, referencing previous controversies involving BJP figures. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also expressed their support for Phogat.
Amid these reactions, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticized the oversight by Phogat’s coaches and physiotherapists. Ex-boxer Vijender Singh, a former Congress member, hinted at possible sabotage against India’s medal hopes.
This incident has potential political implications, especially in Haryana, Phogat’s home state, where an Assembly election is approaching. While the Haryana government urged against politicizing the issue, Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda highlighted Phogat’s hard work and the challenges she faced.
