On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the Lok Sabha regarding the unrest in Bangladesh and its impact on India. He reported that approximately 19,000 Indian nationals are currently in Bangladesh, including around 9,000 students. Jaishankar noted that most Indian students had returned home in July when the situation in Bangladesh escalated.
He assured that the Indian government is in regular contact with its citizens in Bangladesh through diplomatic channels and is keeping a close eye on the situation of minorities in the country. Jaishankar emphasized that India remains concerned until peace is restored.
Regarding former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to India, Jaishankar explained that she sought permission to come to India on short notice. Following a violent demonstration in Dhaka on August 5 and a meeting with security leaders, Hasina requested to come to India, which was quickly approved. She arrived in Delhi the following evening. Hasina met with NSA Ajit Doval and senior military officials upon her arrival.
In response to the unrest, the Border Security Force (BSF) has heightened security along the Indo-Bangladesh border and is coordinating with local officials to ensure law and order.
