Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that governors should serve as “effective bridges” between the Centre and the states, urging them to engage with the public and social organizations to support the underprivileged. He made these remarks during the Conference of Governors at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, inaugurated by President Droupadi Murmu.
During the conference, which covers topics such as Centre-state relations and welfare schemes, PM Narendra Modi highlighted the significant role of governors within the constitutional framework, especially in tribal areas.
President Murmu stated that the conference’s agenda includes crucial issues for national goals, emphasizing the transformative impact of the three new criminal laws on India’s justice system. She stressed the need for better coordination among central agencies and urged governors to enhance this cooperation in their states.
Murmu also highlighted the importance of quality higher education as a driver of individual development, social change, and economic progress. She encouraged governors to support educational reforms as chancellors of state universities.
Addressing inclusive development, Murmu pointed to the significant tribal population and asked governors for suggestions to achieve their development. She emphasized ‘youth development’ and the ‘MY Bharat’ campaign, urging governors to channel youth energy into constructive work and promote unity through the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ campaign.
The conference occurs amid tensions between governors and opposition-ruled states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. However, Murmu expressed confidence in the governors’ commitment to their constitutional duties and public welfare.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar reminded governors of their constitutional responsibilities to raise awareness about social welfare schemes and recent developments. Union Home Minister Amit Shah encouraged governors to visit vibrant villages and aspirational districts to boost local development efforts.
