Delhi has taken swift action to tighten security and deploy drones in sensitive areas following Monday’s communal clash in Nuh, Haryana, which had reverberating effects in posh areas of Gurugram. The situation has raised concerns about public safety and sparked investigations into the causes of the violence.
In response to the violence that erupted on Tuesday, with several shops and shanties near a residential society in Gurugram set ablaze, the city has imposed prohibitory orders. The sale of loose petrol or diesel has also been banned to prevent further incidents of arson. Police authorities are urging citizens to avoid falling prey to rumors and to refrain from giving credence to unverified reports circulating on social media. The spread of misinformation can exacerbate tensions and escalate unrest.
The communal clash originally broke out during a religious procession in Nuh, just 50 km away from Delhi. The violence was triggered by an objectionable viral video, prompting a mob to attack the procession with stones. Over 2,500 participants sought refuge in a temple to escape the violence. However, as the evening progressed, the situation escalated, leading to the torching of a mosque post-midnight. Mobs went on a rampage in both Nuh and neighboring Gurugram, destroying over a hundred vehicles.
Right-wing organizations, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and Bajrang Dal have staged protest marches in several parts of Delhi to denounce the violence in Haryana. These demonstrations have caused traffic jams in various areas of Delhi and its neighboring regions. Videos on social media have depicted Bajrang Dal supporters reciting Hanuman Chalisa near the Nirman Vihar Metro Station. Subsequently, they attempted to block Vikas Marg, but the police intervened and dispersed the crowd.
In response to the situation, the Supreme Court has urged Delhi authorities to deploy heavy forces and install CCTVs to prevent any further escalation of violence and ensure public safety. The tragic clashes have resulted in the deaths of at least six people, including two police personnel, raising questions about the role of social media posts and alleged inaction on the part of authorities.
To conduct a thorough investigation into the cases of communal violence and examine the role of Bajrang Dal member Monu Manesar, a Special Investigation Team is being set up. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has expressed suspicions of a “conspiracy” behind Monday’s clashes and termed the incident “unfortunate.” He alleges that some individuals conspired to attack those participating in the yatra and the police, leading to violence in several places.
As the situation remains tense, the authorities are leaving no stone unturned to restore peace and maintain order in Gurugram and its surrounding areas. Enhanced security measures and vigilant monitoring, including the deployment of drones, are critical steps toward achieving stability in the region. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to investigate the underlying causes of the clashes and prevent any further escalation of violence.
