The aftermath of communal violence in Haryana’s Nuh district has resulted in a death toll of five, with over 50 individuals sustaining injuries after a mob unleashed chaos during a religious procession on Monday evening, as reported by the police.
Among the reported deaths, four occurred in Nuh including two home guards and two locals, one of whom remains unidentified. Meanwhile, a death was reported in Gurugram, where miscreants fired upon and later set ablaze a mosque, causing significant damage and adding to the growing unrest.
In response to the escalating violence, Haryana’s home minister, Anil Vij, announced the imposition of a curfew in the violence-hit Nuh district. The situation became so dire that prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were issued in several districts of Haryana, encompassing Nuh, Gurugram, and Rewari. Additionally, internet services in the region have been suspended until August 2 to curb the spread of misinformation and further unrest.
The violence erupted when a religious procession called ‘Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra,’ flagged off from Gurugram’s Civil Lines by BJP district president Gargi Kakkar, was obstructed by a group of men near Khedla Mod in Nuh. This confrontation led to a series of clashes, resulting in the widespread destruction of properties, including burnt and damaged cars and vandalized shops.
Similar scenes of destruction were witnessed in Sohna near Sohna Chowk, where approximately 50 cars were damaged, and numerous shops were either set on fire or looted. The situation remained tense in Nuh on Tuesday morning, with over 50 shops, including vendors’ carts, reported vandalized.
To restore order, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) battalions were deployed in the affected districts to maintain peace and contain the violence. Nevertheless, the situation remained volatile, with further incidents reported, such as the attack on a mosque in Gurugram’s sector 57, resulting in one confirmed death and three injured individuals, one of whom remains critical.
The violence first erupted in Nuh on Monday afternoon, following an attack on a religious procession passing through the district, which tragically claimed the lives of two home guards and left several others injured, including policemen. As the unrest spread to other parts of Haryana, including Sohna in Gurugram district, the Haryana government took preventive measures, announcing the closure of schools in Gurugram, Faridabad, and Palwal for Tuesday.
The authorities are actively investigating the incidents and working towards establishing peace and harmony in the region. Urgent efforts are needed from all stakeholders, including the government, community leaders, and citizens, to address the root causes of the violence and promote dialogue and understanding among different communities. Only through collective action and empathy can Haryana move towards healing and preventing such tragic events from occurring in the future.
