A Mahindra Bolero automobile carrying 10 passengers was traveling to a shrine in Hokara town when the accident happened at 7.30 am, according to a representative of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
Lalita Negi, in head of publicity for the SDRF, reported that all 10 bodies had been found. “District Control Room Pithoragarh notified the local SDRF unit in the morning that a car had fallen into a gorge close to Hokara, around 100 kilometers from Pithoragarh town. An SDRF rescue crew from Askot and another from Kapkot were dispatched right away to the scene of the accident, according to Negi.
According to the official, the deceased were all traveling to the Kokila Devi shrine in Hokara and were all from the Shama village in the Bageshwar district.
The rescue personnel had a difficult time locating the victims and removing them because of the terrain’s steepness, according to Negi. With the assistance of locals, “the rescue teams recovered all 10 bodies by 3 pm and handed them to the police,” she continued.
Nisha Singh, 24, and Ummed Singh, 28, were among the dead. The remaining individuals were identified as Mahesh Singh (40), Kundan Singh (58), Kishan Singh (65), Dharma Singh (69), Sundar Singh (37), Khushal Singh (64), Dhan Singh (52) and Shankar Singh (40).
A resident of Hokara village named Sundar Singh claimed that heavy rain on Wednesday night caused debris to fall and obstruct the road. Given that there was debris on the road, Singh speculated that the car may have lost control.
Pushkar Singh Dhami, the chief minister, also conveyed his sorrow over the deaths caused by the disaster. He tweeted, “Very sad news has been received about the deaths of numerous individuals as a result of the accident of a car travelling from Shama in Bageshwar towards Nachni in Pithoragarh.
In Uttarakhand, there were 1,674 traffic accidents last year that resulted in 1,042 fatalities, with a severity rate of 62.24%. The severity of an accident is measured by the number of fatalities per 100 traffic accidents. 820 persons died in 1,405 accidents in 2021, with a 59.94% accident severity rate.
One of the factors contributing to the growth in road accidents in the state is frequently noted as increased vehicular traffic, particularly in hilly areas. The state of Uttarakhand had almost 400,000 four-wheeler registrations when it was separated from Uttar Pradesh in November 2000. 3.2 million automobiles are currently registered there, according to RTO data.
