During the NCP’s foundation day programme in Delhi, Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), announced the appointment of Supriya Sule and Praful Patel as working presidents of the party. This marks a significant development for the NCP, as it is the first time in the party’s 24-year history since its formation on June 10, 1999, that working presidents have been appointed.
The announcement was made in the presence of Ajit Pawar, Sharad Pawar ‘s nephew and the Opposition leader in the Maharashtra assembly. It is worth noting that Ajit Pawar has reportedly been engaged in a power struggle with Supriya Sule, who is Sharad Pawar’s daughter.
Previously, Sharad Pawar had announced his resignation as the party’s national president on May 3 but withdrew his decision two days later. Pawar emphasized the need for a succession plan within the organization and expressed his intention to focus on organizational changes, assigning new responsibilities, and fostering new leadership within the party.
Supriya Sule has been entrusted with the responsibility of Maharashtra, which is considered the party’s stronghold. In addition, as the new working president, she will also oversee party affairs in other states such as Haryana and Punjab. Praful Patel, on the other hand, has been assigned the task of strengthening the party’s presence and expanding its base in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Goa.
The event witnessed the presence of senior leaders, including Chhagan Bhujbal and Sunil Ratkate, among others, demonstrating their support for the new appointments.
With the introduction of working presidents, Sharad Pawar aims to bring new perspectives and shared leadership to the NCP. By delegating responsibilities to Supriya Sule and Praful Patel, he intends to strengthen the party’s regional presence, enhance organizational capabilities, and prepare for the future. These appointments are expected to bring about renewed vigour and strategic direction for the NCP as it moves forward.
