The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) rejected Sharad Pawar ‘s resignation as party president on Friday and asked him to continue leading the party he founded, senior NCP Praful Patel said after the party’s core committee meeting to elect its next leader.
The decision was made just days after Sharad Pawar announced his resignation from the post. NCP party workers began celebrating shortly after senior NCP Praful Patel announced the committee’s decision at a press conference.
“Mr Pawar expressed his desire to resign as party president.” The resignation is unanimously rejected. “We have unanimously decided to request that he continue as party president,” Patel said at the press conference.
Patel went on to say that many top leaders in the country have reached out to Pawar, Supriya Sule, and even him in recent days to express their feelings. “We have heard the sentiments of the cadre from all districts.” “Everyone has said that he should not step down as party chief,” he said.
“They are sad, and they are hurt and upset.” That cannot be ignored. Whatever decision Mr Pawar made, he did not put us at ease. We had a meeting today after he charged us with selecting the next party leader. “At today’s meeting, the committee unanimously passed a resolution,” Patel said.
NCP leaders Ajit Pawar and Supriya Sule were seen arriving at the party’s Mumbai headquarters to attend the meeting.
The 18-member committee that met comprised Patel, Sunil Tatkare, KK Sharma, Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, Sule, Chhagan Bhujbal, Dilip Walse Patil, Anil Deshmukh, Rajesh Tope, Jitendra Awhad, Hasan Mushrif, Dhananjay Munde, Jaidev Gaikwad, Narhari Jhirwal, Fauzia Khan, president, Nationalist Mahila Congress, Dheeraj Sharma, president Nationalist Youth Congress.
Workers from the NCP were seen holding signs in support of Sharad Pawar, urging him to reconsider his decision. Sharad Pawar announced his resignation as party president on Tuesday.
Ajit Pawar backed the former’s decision, saying the next party chief will report to Sharad Pawar.
The statement was met with an outpouring of emotion from party workers and leaders, who urged the veteran MP to reconsider his decision.
Jayant Patil stated that even though Sharad Pawar made the decision, people from all over Maharashtra and beyond are pleading with him to reverse his decision.
