The Congress attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday for making a joke about a “suicide note,” with senior party leader Rahul Gandhi saying he should not “make fun of” thousands of families who lose their children due to suicide.
During a media conference on Wednesday, PM Modi told a joke about a professor reading a suicide note left behind by his daughter and expressing disappointment over a spelling error. PM Modi told the joke, which he said he had heard as a child, after remarking that the channel’s editor-in-chief had begun speaking fluent Hindi.
“Thousands of families have lost children to suicide.” “The Prime Minister should not make fun of them!” Rahul Gandhi said this in a Hindi tweet.
Using data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that 1,64,033 Indians committed suicide in 2021, with a large percentage being under the age of 30. Priyanka Gandhi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying depression and suicide among youth is a tragedy, not a laughing matter.
She posted on Twitter, tagging PM Modi and the mental health advocacy group “The Live Love Laugh Foundation,” saying, “The Prime Minister and those laughing heartily at his joke ought to educate themselves better and create awareness rather than mock mental health issues in this insensitive, morbid manner.”
In addition, the Congress posted a video of Modi’s comments on social media, asking, “How can anyone be so insensitive about suicide?”
“According to official statistics, 1.64 lakh or more Indians committed suicide in 2021. According to the Congress, the prime minister thinks it’s funny that 450 people are forced to commit suicide each day in our nation.
