
Pamela Chopra, Yash Chopra’s wife, died this morning, April 20. She was 74 years old at the time. Pamela Chopra was an accomplished Indian playback singer. She was also an independent film writer and producer. Pamela Chopra has been admitted to Mumbai’s Lilavati hospital for the past 15 days, according to reports. Doctors put her on a ventilator, but her condition worsened. She was cremated today at 11 a.m. in Mumbai.
The YRF released a statement confirming Pamela Chopra’s death. “With heavy hearts, the Chopra family would like to inform you that Pamela Chopra 74, died this morning,” it said. Her cremation took place today at 11 a.m. in Mumbai. We appreciate your prayers, and the family would appreciate privacy during this time of deep sadness and reflection (sic).”
Pamela Chopra was most recently seen in the YRF documentary The Romantics, where she discussed her husband Yash Chopra’s journey. The Romantics emphasized not only Yash Chopra’s contributions to the Hindi film industry but also Pamela’s contributions. Pamela recounted the director’s sleepless nights before the release of his first film as a producer (Daag, 1973) on the show. Yash also frequently reached out to his wife to better understand the female perspective.
Pamela married Yash Chopra in a traditional ceremony in 1970. It was a pre-arranged union. Aditya and Uday Chopra are their two sons. Aditya is a film director and producer. Rani Mukerji is his wife. Uday is a film producer and actor.
Pamela Chopra has performed several film songs for her husband’s films, ranging from Kabhie Kabhie (1976) to Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002). Her 1993 film Aaina was produced independently by her. Pamela also co-wrote the script for her husband Yash Chopra’s 1997 film Dil To Pagal Hai with her son Aditya Chopra and professional writer Tanuja Chandra. She has also appeared on screen only once. She and her husband first appeared together in the film Dil To Pagal Hai’s opening song, Ek Duje Ke Vaaste.
