The first teaser for Homi Adajania’s upcoming Disney Plus Hotstar series Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo has been released. The show appears to be turning the traditional saas-bahu drama on its head until we see the women of the house cursing and resorting to violence.
The short clip begins with Ekta Kapoor’s title song from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi playing in the background. Things appear to be going well in Dimple Kapadia’s household as she performs aarti and other rituals and the women of the household play garba. However, we soon see a drastically different avatar of the actor emerge on the screen, pointing a rifle at someone who is not visible in the camera.
“Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo revolves around four inimitable women, the matriarch Savitri, her daughters-in-law Bijli and Kajal, and her daughter Shanta who live in Hastipur – a forgotten village in the north-west,” according to the official synopsis. Savitri owns Rani Cooperative, which sells everything from jari-booti balms to textiles. But not everything here is as it appears. This cottage industry turns out to be a front for South Asia’s largest drug cartel.“
“When tragedy strikes and the world turns its back on her, Savitri doesn’t curl up and die but rises from the ashes and creates her destiny,” Dimple Kapadia said of the Disney Plus Hotstar show. This is what I like about her personality. She is the owner of her alternate moral compass. She only accepts trust as payment. Savitri is the most badass saas you’ve ever seen, and she’s a lot of fun to watch. She has many mysterious faces. She is a master of manipulation, brutal and vulnerable, playing a high-stakes game that swings between life and death.”
Meanwhile, creator Homi Adajania stated that he wanted to push the boundaries of what was possible in the genre. “With Saas Bahu Aur Flamingo , I wanted to create a chaotic world dominated by indomitable women and break stereotypes,” he said in a statement. “The biggest one that we have broken is the Saas-Bahu cliché.” I needed strong actors, and Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar, and Isha Talwar fit the bill. They have taken ownership of their characters and given them life, making them truly unique. Even though they are a dysfunctional family, when they are threatened, they unite as a terrifying force to be reckoned with. And believe me, you don’t want to be in their way when that happens!”
Among those who play pivotal roles are Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Angira Dhar, Isha Talwar, Deepak Dobriyal, and Monica Dogra. The series will be released on May 5.
