According to Indore collector Ilayaraja T, at least 12 people were killed and 19 others were rescued after a stepwell at a temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore collapsed on Thursday. According to eyewitnesses, the roof of an ancient ‘bavdi’ (large well) located in Beleshwar Mahadev Jhulelal Temple in Indore collapsed during the Ram Navami festival, causing nearly 25 people to fall inside.
According to PTI, a large number of people had gathered on the ancient bavdi’s roof, which caved in due to being unable to bear the load.
In a video shared by news agency ANI, police and locals can be seen attempting to rescue devotees trapped in the collapsed stepwell.
According to his office, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken cognizance of the incident and directed local authorities to expedite the rescue operation.
“The CMO is in regular contact with the Indore district administration.” Top Indore Police and district administration officials are on the scene. Attempts are being made to relocate the devotees. “Some people have also been rescued,” according to the statement.
“It’s an unfortunate incident,” the CM said. A rescue operation is currently underway. Ten people were safely rescued, while nine others are still trapped and will be rescued. Rescue efforts are currently underway.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his displeasure with the incident. “I am deeply distressed by the incident in Indore. I spoke with Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan Ji and received an update on the situation. The state government is moving quickly to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. “My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected and their families,” he said on Twitter.
