There are widespread rumours flying all over the place that Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh and his supporters were arrested on Saturday. But, there are no confirmations or corroborations to support the news. There is still no official confirmation about the so-called “arrest of Amritpal Singh”. What’s actually happening? What are Punjab Police doing?
It was known that police of eight districts were after him and were chasing his vehicle to arrest him. Police force was deployed at several spots in Moga and Jalandhar districts. Mobile internet services have also been suspended in parts of Punjab till 12:00 PM on March 19.
Notably, Amritpal, head of pro-Khalistan organisation ‘Waris Punjab De’, has been facing three cases. Of these, two were lodged at the Ajmala Police station of Amritsar district. Enraged by the arrest of one of his close associates, Amritpal had stormed into the Ajnala Police station on Feb 23.
On Saturday, Amritpal Singh was supposed to attend programmes at Shahkot-Malsian area on Jalandhar-Moga NH and Rampura Phool in Bathinda district. Jalandhar and Moga police stormed the area to arrest Amritpal Singh in a joint operation. But, Amritpal Singh was seen escaping in his car, in a video on social media.
According to Punjab Police, a search operation is put forth at suspicious locations to apprehend Amritpal Singh and 78 people have been arrested so far. Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been enforced in many districts of Punjab, which restricts people from gathering in a groups of four or more.
Political analysts state that this is a well-planned drama to divert the attention of public ahead of Sidhu Moosewala’s first barsi on March 19. It is said that Amritpal Singh could’ve been easily caught since he wasn’t absconding.
Since rumours and unreliable news could go rampant during such situations, Punjab Police requested the public to maintain peace and harmony.
