In response to pressure from the Lokayukta’s anti-corruption wing, Karnataka BJP MLA Madal Virupakshappa resigned as chairman of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, the maker of Mysore Sandal Soap.
Madal Virupakshappa has come under fire after his son was caught accepting a Rs 40 lakh bribe, and Lokayukta officials recovered Rs 6 crore in cash from his home.
The chairman of the state-owned Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited is Virupakshappa, MLA from Channagiri in the Davanagere district. Prashanth Madal, his son, works for the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board as the chief accountant (BWSSB).
Prashanth Madal was caught red-handed taking a bribe of Rs 40 lakh at the KSDL office on Thursday. He was taken into custody. Following this, the Karnataka government’s anti-corruption watchdog raided Virupakshappa’s home and offices.
The Lokayukta discovered a large amount of cash at the BJP MLA’s residence. The KSDL office was raided for Rs 1.7 crore, and Virupakshappa’s house was raided for Rs 6 crore. The anti-corruption watchdog will almost certainly summon the MLA for questioning as well.
Madal Virupakshappa denied the allegations against him in his resignation letter. “I have no connection to the Lokayukta raid. This is a plot against my family and me.”
According to Lokayukta officials, a man filed a complaint against Prashanth on Thursday morning, accusing him of accepting bribes. As a result, Lokayukta officials set up a trap and caught Prashanth red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40 lakh.
“We conducted searches at his office and found Rs 1.7 crore,” a Lokayukta official said. We believe Prashanth accepted bribes on behalf of his father. We’re looking into the source of the money found in his office.”
The opposition Congress attacked the BJP harshly, referring to it as the “Bhrasht Janta Party,” after the incident came to light.
“#40Percent Corruption has an odious stench.
Sarkara has also ruined the lovely scent of Mysore Sandal Soap. First, KSDL Chairman-BJP MLA Virupakshappa’s son is caught taking a bribe of â140 Lakh and within 24 hours, â16,00,00,000 is recovered from his house (sic) “Randeep Surjewala, Congress leader, tweeted.
