Selfiee , starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi, had a disappointing first weekend, earning just over 10 crore net. The Hindi film Selfie is a remake of the Malayalam film Driving Licence, which premiered in 2019 and starred Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu. After Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, and Ram Setu last year, it is Akshay’s latest Hindi film to underperform at the box office.
Selfiee, directed by Raj Mehta, grossed 2.60 crores on Friday and 3.75 crores on Saturday. It only managed to earn 3.85 crores on Sunday. According to the trade website Box Office India, its first weekend collections are estimated to be around 10.20 crore net.
The film’s lower-than-expected opening is said to be Akshay’s worst opening in a decade. The actor also serves as a producer on the film. The film also stars Nushrat Bharuccha and Diana Penty in addition to Akshay and Emraan. The lead actors are collaborating for the first time. Akshay had previously collaborated with Raj on his directorial debut, Good Newswz (2019). Kareena Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh, and Kiara Advani also appeared in the comedy film.
In a recent interview with Aaj Tak, the actor discussed taking responsibility and revealed that this had happened to him previously in his career. “This is not the first time this has happened to me,” he explained. I have had 16 consecutive flops in my career. There was a time when I had eight films that didn’t work in a row. Now I’ve had three or four films that didn’t work in a row. The problem is that it is your fault, film ka na chalna (a film not working). The audience has changed, and you must adapt or dismantle yourself. You must restart because the audience expects to see something different.”
Akshay is heading to the United States for The Entertainers, a concert tour with Nora Fatehi, Disha Patani, Mouni Roy, and Sonam Bajwa. Later this year, he will also appear in OMG 2 – Oh My God! 2, the Hindi remake of Soorarai Pottru, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, and the Jaswant Singh Gill biopic.
