The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is rapidly approaching, and audience interest is already building. This season, Jio-led Sports18 will broadcast the IPL in the country, and according to sources, they would give a 4K quality stream of the competition. The BCCI has approved this decision, which is expected to considerably improve the viewing experience for fans. A 4K resolution High-Definition (HD) video has four times the resolution of a 1080p HD video. Hotstar, the IPL’s then-official digital partner, televised matches in HD until 2022. However, viewers will now be able to watch matches in 4K resolution as well.
According to sources, Jio claimed to be showing FIFA matches in 4K resolution, however, this was not the case. “For Jio, FIFA was a learning experience. “They have worked tirelessly on strengthening the technical front over the last two months and are expected to give a high-quality experience during IPL,” said a senior media planner.
During FIFA, the broadcaster was chastised for technical difficulties during the telecast of two games. The finals, which drew a large crowd, brought the situation under control.
According to industry sources, Sports18 spent several hundred crores building its IT crew for the IPL. According to a seasoned professional, it presently has one of the largest technical teams in India.
Furthermore, Jio is considering offering the broadcast in 16 to 17 additional languages, including Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Odia.
“In their pitch, they emphasized the importance of making the IPL more local. Everyone should be able to use it on their mobile headset in their preferred language.”
