
On Saturday, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde paid floral tributes to the martyrs who died fighting terrorists who attacked Mumbai 14 years ago.
They paid their respects at the martyrs’ memorial in south Mumbai, where Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, minister Deepak Kesarkar, Chief Secretary Manu Kumar Srivastava, state Director General of Police (DGP) Rajnish Seth, Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, and other officials were present.
Family members of the police officers who died in the November 2008 attacks also paid tribute to the martyrs. On November 26, 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists arrived by sea and opened fire indiscriminately on people, killing 166 people, including 18 security personnel, and injuring several others, as well as causing property damage worth crores.
The terrorists killed Hemant Karkare, the then-head of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Mumbai’s Additional Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte, and Senior Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar.
The attack began on November 26 and lasted until November 29. Terrorists targeted the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, the Leopold Cafe, Cama Hospital, and the Nariman House Jewish Community Centre. Ajmal Kasab was the only terrorist apprehended alive. On November 21, 2012, he was hanged four years later.
